International schools on the Costa del Sol

British, German, Scandinavian and IB — where they are, and how school choice shapes where families buy.
For families relocating, this is usually the first decision and it quietly determines the second. Choose the school, then choose the neighbourhood — doing it the other way round produces a daily commute nobody enjoys.
The British schools
The largest group by some distance, following the English national curriculum through to A-levels, spread between Marbella, Elviria, Estepona and Sotogrande. Long-established, heavily oversubscribed in the popular year groups, and worth applying to well before you complete on a house.
German and Scandinavian
The German School near Elviria serves the substantial German-speaking community in Marbella East, and there are Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish schools along the coast reflecting how established those communities are here. For families intending to return home eventually, curriculum continuity matters more than most buyers initially expect.
The IB route
Several schools offer the International Baccalaureate, which is the pragmatic choice for families who may move again. Places are competitive at sixth form.
How it affects where you buy
The school run is the single most repeated journey a family makes here, and the coast road at half past eight is not quick. Twenty minutes on a viewing day is forty in term time.
